Auckland

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city with a population of about 1.5 million people (almost 1/3 of NZ’s population).  Called the ‘City of Sails’, the Waitemata Harbour is within walking distance of the university and it stretches eastward to several popular swimming beaches (including Mission Bay and Kohimarama).  The quaint Devonport suburb is a short ferry ride from the Auckland Ferry Building.  Some islands worth visiting by ferry include Tiritiri Matangi, Rangitoto and Waiheke.  Also within walking  distance from the university is Auckland Museum, one of the two most important NZ museums, at the  Auckland domain. The Parnell shopping precinct is also close by, as is the main Auckland CBD.

Things to do

Auckland the month of December ushers in the first month of summer. The beaches and harbours become more crowded as the temperature rises, and Auckland’s neighborhoods become lively with outdoor dining and long weekend brunches. It is a month of increased sunshine and temperatures– a great time for visitors!

Auckland has a temperate climate. When visiting Auckland, it’s a good idea to pack a rainproof jacket as well as sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen during the spring and summer due to New Zealand’s high UV rating and due to its nature of showcasing ‘four seasons in one day’.
